What You Need

Make sure that your TV is cable-ready and able to receive at least 80 analog cable channels. "Digital-only" televisions will not work. Have the owner’s manual for your television available.

Cable TV Service

The University of Arizona provides the equivalent of "expanded basic" cable TV services to all campus housing facilities except Babcock, La Aldea and Sky View Apartments. Cox Communications, the local cable TV provider in the city of Tucson, provides service to these three facilities.

Installing Your Cable TV

The instructions that follow are generic in nature and are meant to serve only as guidelines. Refer to your TV owner's manual for specific instructions for your set.

  1. Connect the TV to the cable wall jack using a coaxial cable. If the TV has more than one input jack, select the one labeled "CABLE" or "CATV."
  2. Plug the TV power cord into an electrical outlet and turn the TV power on.
  3. Configure your set to receive CABLE or CATV signals, usually accessed through a MENU or SETUP option on the TV's remote control. Refer to your TV owner's manual for specific directions for your set.
  4. Program the TV to receive channels (usually accomplished using the same MENU or SETUP option used above) by locating and selecting an option labeled AUTOPROGRAM. The TV will search through all channels and program the working channels. Refer to your TV owner's manual for specific directions for your set.

Your TV should now receive all campus channels. If you feel there is a problem with the cable wall jack, report it by completing and submitting a maintenance request (Area Maintenance Forms are typically available and submitted near the front desk of your residence). Please be advised that Residence Life staff are not available to help you set up your television; you must do that yourself.

Residence Life Cable Television System Channel Lineups

These lineups became effective March 12, 2007, and are subject to change.

Cable Lineup for Babcock, La Aldea and Sky View Apartments

Babcock, La Aldea and Sky View Apartments have a different cable provider (Cox Communications) than do the on-campus residence halls.

Cox Communications provides basic and expanded cable for residents of these off-campus halls. Residents may expand their service directly by going through Cox Communications.

Please go to Cox's cable lineup to view your cable lineup. The page defaults to the Phoenix area lineup; scroll down until you see the “Southern Arizona” lineups and click on the link for “Tucson.”

Streaming Devices (“Slingboxes”™) With Your TV

Streaming devices re-route cable TV to the internet so that programming can be viewed on your computer in a browser window. The most familiar brand of such device is the Slingbox™, manufactured by Sling Media.

Residents may have and use such appliances in U of A residence halls, but there is no guarantee that they will work. If they use too much bandwidth on the academic network, Residence Life may choose to cap/cut off the device’s usage.

Residence Life does not provide any support for streaming devices.
