Safety and Security at La Aldea

Residence Life is committed to providing our students with a safe and secure environment where they can pursue their studies while learning about themselves and others in the community. Security in La Aldea is provided in a number of ways, but it is important that every student in our community be aware of their environment and make good decisions about their own safety, and that of their neighbors.
All exterior doors of La Aldea are locked 24 hours a day. You should, however, consider the door to your apartment to be like the door to your apartment if you lived off-campus, and keep it locked at all times, especially when you are not in your room.
Building Access
La Aldea is equipped with a card access system. This system utilizes your CatCard and a four-digit PIN number chosen when you check in to La Aldea. Only residents of the building can gain access by swiping their cards through the card reader and entering their personal four-digit PINs. The system is operational 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Emergency Evacuation Plan
During a fire alarm or an emergency situation that requires immediate evacuation of La Aldea, please follow the protocol listed in the La Aldea Evacuation Plan [PDF]. Detailed information on evacuation areas are listed based on your apartment number.
Residence Hall UAPD Liasion Program
UAPD and Residence Life joined hands to institute a liaison program in our communities. The program assigns a specific officer to each residence hall and the La Aldea Community. This unique concept allows for a community- or problem-oriented policing approach and encourages residents to get to know members of UAPD. Liaison officers can provide presentations to residents or assist in solving problems common to the entire community.
Security Tips
While you are a student at The University of Arizona and a resident in University
housing, you should remember that you are largely responsible for your own
personal safety. Here are some precautions:
- When leaving the complex at night, tell your roommate when s/he should expect your return.
- After dark, try not to walk alone. If possible, walk with a friend, or call Safe Ride or Safe Walk
- If you must walk alone, walk with confidence and avoid dark, remote areas.
- Never leave goods or belongings unattended.
- If you are the victim of an attack or other crime, contact UAPD and a La Aldea staff member as soon as possible.
- Report solicitors or suspicious persons to UAPD and a La Aldea staff member immediately.
- Always carry your keys, CatCard, and if possible a cell phone.
- Keep your apartment door closed and locked when you are away and understand that you can enhance your personal safety and that of your roommate(s) by keeping the door closed and locked at all times.
- Please immediately inform a member of the community staff about any unsafe conditions or behaviors that threaten the safety or security of your community.
- Do not prop open exterior gates or let anyone you do not know follow you in.
To guard against theft of your property, the University recommends that the following safeguards be observed:
- Record on an Electronic Inventory form all serial numbers and makes of radios, watches, laptops, CD players, iPods etc.
- Keep money and valuables in a secure place. Do not keep excessive amounts of cash in your room, apartment, or on your person.
- Record the numbers of all credit cards and checking accounts; record the addresses of these companies and banks so that they can be notified if cards are lost or stolen.
- Report the presence of any strangers in non-public areas of La Aldea to UAPD and a staff member.
