Social Justice Wing in Pima Hall for 2013-2014

The Social Justice Wing is a space that celebrates and affirms the diverse backgrounds of all its residents. Whether ability, body size/appearance, gender identity, nationality, political affiliation, sexual orientation, social class, race, religion/spirituality, or other identities, students are encouraged to bring their whole selves to Social Justice Wing. The wing is a safe space, where students may discuss their differences and pluralistic identities without fear of slurs, attacks or discrimination. With neighbors of different identities and backgrounds, we can learn about our differences and celebrate, rather than suppress them.

The Social Justice Wing creates opportunities for students to learn about issues such as abelism, cisgenderism, classism, homophobia, racism, sexism, and more. Weaving together personal experience and information on discrimination, privilege and oppression, and social change, the wing works to empower residents to be advocates for social justice in all that they do. Through a variety of programs and activities, the Social Justice Wing offers a dynamic experience for students wishing to grow as community leaders, excel academically, and build support and community ties.

Residents of Social Justice Wing are strongly encouraged to enroll in the Intergroup Dialogue (IGD) courses in the spring semester, which are a joint partnership through the UA Cultural Centers and Residence Life. IGDs are peer-led, for credit, courses that explore issues of social justice and encourage participants to take action! IGD is a great way for residents of Social Justice Wing to apply what they are learning by living in the community to their academic work.

The Social Justice Wing comprises 7 double rooms (14 beds) in Pima Hall. The wing also offers the option of gender-inclusive roommate pairings, for those interested. For more information on gender inclusive housing, contact socialjustice@life.arizona.edu.

"Social Justice Wing is a great addition to our current resources on campus! It provides incoming and returning students with a community of people who will stand with them, regardless of who they are. Having a wing of diverse people who are all very accepting will ease a student’s transition and help them to find support within the university community. Such a group of students will doubtlessly create an environment rich in the values of social justice!"
