Windows 2000
- Go to the Start Menu and select Settings:

Settings Tab - Select Control Panel:

The Control Panel - Select Network and Dial-Up Connections:

Network and Dial-up Connections - Double-click on the icon for your ethernet adapter. The default text should say "Local Area Connection":

The Local Area Connection - Click on the Properties button:

Properties - Disable "File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks" by unchecking it. (You can also remove it by clicking on it and then clicking on "Uninstall.")
- Single-click on Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).
- Click on "Properties":

The Internet Protocol TCP/IP - Select "Obtain an IP address automatically" and "Obtain DNS server address automatically":

Obtain Automatically
You are now ready to get your adapter address.
Windows XP Service Pack 2
- Click the Start button and choose Control Panel:
The Control Panel will appear.

Start Menu --> Control Panel - Double-click on the Network Connections icon:
The Network Connections window will appear.

Network Connections -

The Network Connections Window - Double-click on the LAN [Local Area Connection] icon (it will probably be labeled as "disconnected"). The LAN Status dialog box will appear:

The Local Area Connection Status Dialog Box - Click the Properties button, as shown above. The Local Area Connection Properties dialog box will appear:

The Local Area Connection Properties Dialog Box - Highlight the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) connection, as shown above.
- Click the Properties button. The Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) dialog box will appear:

The Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Dialog Box - Under the General tab, choose Obtain an IP address automatically, as shown circled in red, above.
- Choose Obtain DNS server address automatically, as shown circled in red, above.
- Click OK. The The Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) dialog box will close.
- Close the Local Area Connection Properties dialog box by clicking OK.
- Close the Local Area Connection Status dialog box by clicking Close.
You are now ready to get your adapter address.
Windows Vista
- Click Start and choose Control Panel:
The control panel will open.

Start Button --> Control Panel - Double-click on the Network and Sharing icon:
The Network And Sharing Window will open:

Control Panel --> Network and Sharing Icon 
Control Panel --> Network and Sharing Icon - Click on the View Status link next to Local Area Connection. The Local Area Connection Status dialog box will open:

The Local Area Connection Status Dialog Box - Click the Properties button, as shown above. The Properties dialog box will appear:

The Local Area Connection Properties Dialog Box - Highlight Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4).
- Click the Properties button. The TCP/IPv4 Properties dialog box will open:

The TCP/IPv4 Properties Dialog Box - Under the General tab, choose Obtain an IP address automatically, as shown circled in red, above.
- Choose Obtain DNS server address automatically, as shown circled in red, above.
- Click OK. The The Internet Protocol (TCP/IPv4) dialog box will close.
- Close the Local Area Connection Properties dialog box by clicking OK.
- Close the Local Area Connection Status dialog box by clicking Close.
You are now ready to get your adapter address.
