Windows Configuration

Windows 2000 | Windows XP Service Pack 2 | Windows Vista

Windows 2000

  1. Go to the Start Menu and select Settings:

  2. Select Control Panel:

  3. Select Network and Dial-Up Connections:

  4. Double-click on the icon for your ethernet adapter. The default text should say "Local Area Connection":

  5. Click on the Properties button:

  6. Disable "File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks" by unchecking it. (You can also remove it by clicking on it and then clicking on "Uninstall.")
  7. Single-click on Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).
  8. Click on "Properties":

  9. Select "Obtain an IP address automatically" and "Obtain DNS server address automatically":

You are now ready to get your adapter address.

Windows XP Service Pack 2

  1. Click the Start button and choose Control Panel:

    The Control Panel will appear.
  2. Double-click on the Network Connections icon:

    The Network Connections window will appear.
  3. Double-click on the LAN [Local Area Connection] icon (it will probably be labeled as "disconnected"). The LAN Status dialog box will appear:

  4. Click the Properties button, as shown above. The Local Area Connection Properties dialog box will appear:

  5. Highlight the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) connection, as shown above.
  6. Click the Properties button. The Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) dialog box will appear:

  7. Under the General tab, choose Obtain an IP address automatically, as shown circled in red, above.
  8. Choose Obtain DNS server address automatically, as shown circled in red, above.
  9. Click OK. The The Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) dialog box will close.
  10. Close the Local Area Connection Properties dialog box by clicking OK.
  11. Close the Local Area Connection Status dialog box by clicking Close.

You are now ready to get your adapter address.

Windows Vista

  1. Click Start and choose Control Panel:

    The control panel will open.
  2. Double-click on the Network and Sharing icon:

    The Network And Sharing Window will open:

  3. Click on the View Status link next to Local Area Connection. The Local Area Connection Status dialog box will open:

  4. Click the Properties button, as shown above. The Properties dialog box will appear:

  5. Highlight Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4).
  6. Click the Properties button. The TCP/IPv4 Properties dialog box will open:

  7. Under the General tab, choose Obtain an IP address automatically, as shown circled in red, above.
  8. Choose Obtain DNS server address automatically, as shown circled in red, above.
  9. Click OK. The The Internet Protocol (TCP/IPv4) dialog box will close.
  10. Close the Local Area Connection Properties dialog box by clicking OK.
  11. Close the Local Area Connection Status dialog box by clicking Close.

You are now ready to get your adapter address.
